Cycling Sabotage

Pondered by Nat 4 months ago

I was woken up at 11pm last night by poor old Claire holding onto her BROKEN hand after cycling home one handed after being thrown off her bike after coming across a construction site that had thrown metal gates in the middle of a bike path with nothing lighting them up.

My first thought was ’she has been hit by a car’

My second thought, (after hearing the story) was ‘that was on the WHARF! She was lucky not to have been thrown into the ocean or worse’.

The total lack of respect people in Wellington have for cyclists appalls me. If people went and threw those gates in the middle of a dark road, they would be screamed at, the fact that Claire was lucky to get off lightly with a broken hand (and possibly a broken bike) will probably not even cause a stir.

Isn’t that like criminal negligence or something?

Can you see the gates?

My FAVORITE part was that, in tears, holding her broken hand, Claire came across a security guard and said ‘Are you responsible for those gates lying in the middle of the cycle path?’

And the security guard DIDN’T say “Can I help?”

He didn’t say “Wow we should DO something about that!!!”

He just said “No sorry, that’s no my area”

And left her to bike a couple of kms with a broken hand, in shock, in the middle of the night.

Come on Wellington, this is embarrassing.

I think I might hire you as my agent :)

That really is appalling. I’m all for creating a ruckus about this one. That sucks!

  3. Claire Says:

Oh man - so sorry to hear about Claire. You both have every right to be p-ed off!!! Put your brilliant brains together and I’m sure you can raise a big old brou-haha.

I’m writing to the paper and council. I am also feeling sorry for the person who comes face to face with Claires mum when she arrives in the office.

I think it would be entirely appropriate to have some discussions with OSH, ACC and also both the construction company and the owners of the construction site. Perhaps also the City Council.

I think you’re actually taking this too lightly. A broken hand and bike mangling are both serious matters.

Claire has written in and their response of ‘they must have blown over int he wind’ has made us realise they are just trying to get rid of the problem.

I’ll keep you posted on what goes down :)

Well, if they’d ‘blown over in the wind’ onto the road and caused a car accident they’d be in trouble. It’s still a serious thing. They can’t just shed responsibility.

I hope Claire’s hand is doing OK.
