Internet Trends Provide Unique Insight into Humanity

Pondered by Nat quite a long while ago…

I love finding out stuff about people, so when I stumbled across Trendsspotting I had to quickly close my browser to avoid getting caught up in just how much cool stuff is in there. I love the ways these guys must just come up with a random question, then go research it so we can all know the answer, complete with graphs and analysis.

This is why Google is so scary. They know this stuff. They know that we have our public and private personas: while out in the open we all search for one thing, in the seeming anonymity of a search engine, our minds go elsewhere.

Trendsspotting also put me onto i4giveu.com which is like the web 2.0 confession box, except the priest takes it to the public vote before delivering punishment.

It’s amazing what drives people, its kinda weird that these days we are all voyeurs into places people think are strictly private. Google has already re-shaped the way companies advertise, but when you start to delve into the statistics, you realise we haven’t even chipped the surface of what is now possible. I’m not sure if that is frightening or intriguing.
