JaJah Takes On Vodafone

Pondered by Nat quite a long while ago…

Jajah goes mobileOk, not just Vodafone, but JaJah are entering the mobile space and seeing as I currently hate Vodafone with a vengence (seriously, who else but a virtual monopoly can get away with putting their prices UP in a country where cellphone calls are already about 10 times the cost of the rest of the world?), this is big news for me :)

VOIP is going mainstream

I figured this out the other day when a stranger actually used skype as their method of getting in touch with me. But it get's better than that, because JaJah is making life so easy, you don't even need to use a computer to get access to super cheap phone calls.

Here is how it works. As a registered user, you go to the site and check if your phone is supported. If it is, you grab the plug in and from then on, your mobile calls can be JAJAH calls. The default setting takes numbers with an international prefix and sends them through the Jajah "network". The first phones we are going to support Java based (J2ME) and Symbian TM S60 version 7.x or 8.x phones and we'll be adding to the list as fast as we can. We are counting on our community to tell us what you think and to tell us what phones you'd like to have supported – we'll add them to the list.
- JaJah

Which means we're one step closer to free calls from any phone to anywhere

You have no idea what this means for a country like New Zealand which doesn't have the benefit of a competitive mobile phone market. Check out Techcrunch's review of this 'Killer VOIP Product'.

I prefer a program that has clear calling rates like Skype. With Jajah it is hard to understand the rates.
