People power, it really works
Ben and I were wandering along today and noticed another CD store gone bust. I remember when it was in the news and they were blaming the internet for the ‘loss’ of CD stores as if it was actually a bad thing and that we should stop the internet to save the CDs.
It struck me this morning that actually this is a major victory for the people, we basically said we were sick of overpriced CDs and bloated record companies and embraced a better way, then the old way went bust.
Cool.
Claire has just sent me two links that will help us do this kind of thing again. In New Zealand we are very seriously in threat of losing our clean green image as other countries overtake us in the race to stop this world from heating up. The culture of the car in New Zealand is so strong that even while we laugh at Americans and their SUVs, we are sitting one person in a car along a clogged up motor way, on a trip that would take half as long on a bike.
In Wellington, buses tell us that we have to be careful when we walk along the street not to get in the way of a car and get injured. I haven’t noticed too much attention placed on cars to slow down or stay out of the inner city area (Which, as everyone here knows, is like a 20 minute walk from end to end) to avoid hitting pedestrians.
So get involved and let the Wellington city council know you are sick of the old way and if you are in Auckland or think you should care about things that extend beyond your backyard, vote here too so that locals and tourists alike can take in the view from the Auckland Harbour Bridge without being surrounded by so much smog.
As with every major change, there are people like Claire who do devote their lives (and income!) to getting these things sorted. It is not cool to sit back and leave it up to them.
